The Production Company Who Brought 'EPIC' Music to Chico

By: Caroline Cantrall

Drowning in a sweaty pit of people, the bass pounds and you get that feeling in your stomach while you wait for the beat to drop. As sound pumps out the speakers, the crowd moves as one.

EPIC Productions is responsible for bringing this vibe to Chico, Calif.

It's All About The Jump...

Matthew Whitlock and Shawn Steele brought the electronic dance music scene to Chico in 2010. Previously, local venues only booked rock, hip hop, reggae and other genres of music, but electronic dance music, or EDM, is becoming one of the most popular types of music in Chico.

"We started throwing our first events at Peeking Chinese Restaurant, and now have moved to the Senator Theater!" said Whitlock. EPIC has come a long way since it started. The amount of talent the company has brought to Chico is massive. Steve Aoki, Datsik, Robbie Rivera, Dada Life - all huge names in EDM. And they all bring big noise and even bigger parties.

"During the Steve Aoki show at the Senator," said Whitlock "Steve threw all the food I had just bought for the crew to eat on the crowd."

In The Streets...

The EDM scene in Chico is small, but it exists and strives because of a tight knit group of people. The EPIC street team consists of about 30 people who promote events in the area.

"My entire street team and staff is the only reason EPIC continues in Chico," said Whitlock.

Riley Wells and Ryan Grennan are the promotions directors at EPIC. They work to organize promotion efforts and manage the street team as well.

"The street team is asked to give about 20-30 hours of their time for the entire semester, usually we have around 20 members so ideally that would be about 800 hours of promotion for the semester," said Wells.

Now with over 30 members, the promotion that EPIC is getting out there is, well, epic.

A Light Show...

Lighting is an essential feature to an EDM event.

"There is virtually no live production of music in the EDM market, unfortunately," said Russ Gomery, the Sen. Executive VP at EPIC, "so you must have amazing lighting and effects for your audience to look at and enjoy."

EPIC offers lighting for rent if you want awesome lighting at your party, concert, or any type of event. Brighten up your night with epic lights and effects.

What's Next?
With the beginning of a new company, comes the situation of crisis. Being founded and run by college students, EPIC has faced its fair share of troubles. Not having everything ready for the show, re-arranging set up schedules, getting everything done on time to make sure the fans aren't disappointed - crisis situations that can arise during the prepartion for an event.

"You learn how to get really creative after a while," said Wells.

The future of EPIC Productions looks very bright. Expanding to the San Francisco Bay Area, EPIC's show continue to create a lot of hype and they always bring great vibes.

In the words of Gomery, "all we want is for everyone to have an EPIC night of fun!"
